Frequently Asked Questions about the Segway™ PT

Men on Segways in Oahu©2007 Segway of Hawaii

Is there a training course for the rental?
Yes. We provide a 17-minute training video with all rentals.

How long will it take me to learn how to ride the Segway™?
Before attempting to ride the Segway™, all users must watch a 17-minute instructional video and read the “Riders’ Guide” (both are included with all rentals). In general, people “get the feel” for riding the Segway™ within ten minutes, and become proficient after an hour or so.

How safe is the Segway™?
The highest levels of care and research have gone in to ensuring that the Segway™ is safe to operate. To this end, the Segway™ features self-balancing technology, redundant systems, and sophisticated alerts. Many tens of thousands of hours of testing and usage have demonstrated the Segway’s™ safety when properly used by a trained rider.

Can I ride the Segway™ indoors and outdoors?
Yes, the Segway™ can be used safely both indoors and out.

Can I ride the Segway™ in the street?
As of June 2004, 40 states have passed Segway™-friendly legislation allowing use on sidewalks, bike paths, and certain roads. Laws vary widely from state to state, and it is the renter’s sole responsibility to determine if his intended use of the Segway™ is permitted in this locale. Click here to view Segway’s legal status in your state. The Segway may be operated on all types of private property in all 50 states with the owner’s permission.

On what type of surfaces can I ride the Segway™
The Segway operates best on a hard, dry surface. However, its unique design and special tires allow it to travel on virtually any surface where a person can walk – roads, sidewalks, grass, sand, gravel, dirt, shallow puddles, uphill, downhill, etc. Caution: Do not attempt to use the Segway™ on slippery surfaces such as ice, slick roads, wet grass, etc.

Do the batteries come charged with the rental?
Yes. All Segway™ rentals from Segway of Hawaii are delivered with the batteries fully charged.

How long do the batteries last on a single charge?
This question is best answered in terms of distance. The Segway™ will travel up to 25 miles on a single charge, depending upon terrain. How long it takes to travel that distance is up to the rider. At slower speeds, with frequent stops, the batteries can last over 6 hours. At constant, full-speed (12.5 mph) with no stops, the batteries would last just over an hour.

Can two people ride on one Segway™? No, the Segway™ is only designed to carry one person at a time.

Will the shipping time count against my rental period?
No, we allow a grace period for shipping. Your rental period begins when you receive the Segway™, and ends when you ship it back or drop it off.

Is there any insurance coverage provided?

Am I responsible if a tire deflates or becomes flat?
The renter is not responsible to pay for “normal wear and tear” on the Segway™ during the rental period. However, damage due to rough use, accident, collision, neglect, or any other cause aside from normal wear and tear would be the renter’s responsibility.
